Health & safety

All organisations are required to comply with the duties imposed upon them by the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and subordinate legislation.

Any business employing five or more has, by law, to prepare and bring to the attention of its employees a written Health & Safety Policy Statement.

A Health & Safety Policy should contain the following:

General Policy Statement statement outlining the company’s commitment to health and safety, signed and dated by the most senior company member.

Organisation how the company is organised for health & safety. e.g. lines for communication, specific duties/responsibilities assigned within the organisation.

Arrangements procedures in place for ensuring employees health and safety at work. e.g. should be appropriate to the work the company is applying for.

Any business employing less than 5, must be able to supply copies of policies, procedures, risk assessments etc relevant to the work applied for.

Both councils participate in the national Contractors Health & Safety (CHAS) Scheme. This scheme records Health & Safety assessments carried out by over 130 local authorities across the UK and is supported by government departments (DTI) and agencies (HSC & HSE), TUC and the private sector (CBI). The system is managed by the LB Merton as a national database and is designed to avoid duplication of effort by both firms and public sector organisations. We will therefore accept Health & Safety accreditations carried out by other councils usually within an 18 month period (depending upon the notes on the database).

If your company has not been assessed by the CHAS scheme within the last 18 months, an evaluation questionnaire will need to be completed. You can download the application form from the links page (click here) and this must be returned with the rest of the supporting documentation to the address given when you have completed the electronic form. Further information regarding CHAS can be found on www.chas.gov.uk

I understand the importance of supplying correct and up to date health & safety information.
